Sandra Walton is the artist and designer behind the brush of Painted By Hand. She creates her beads in her little Victorian home studio in Santa Cruz, CA where she also paints in pastel and oils.
She has had a paint brush in her hands since her early teens when she first started painting. Her love affair with beads started much earlier when she was enchanted by an exquisite glass beaded doorway her aunt had in her house. While in art school, in her twenties she had the idea to put brush to bead, to tell her stories and bring joy to people through her art, one bead at a time.
Wood is her bead canvas of choice because of its perfect painting surface, simplicity and light weight. Each bead is painted with porcupine quills and hand cut miniature brushes using acrylic paint. The beads are then hand dipped into a two part resin creating a glass like surface and making the beads versatile, tough and wearable. Grommets are applied to the holes for finishing.
Every bead is an original canvas where Sandra weaves rich color, design and intention. With a strong spirit and a firm background in art and mythology she draws from the images and artworks that have inspired her to create truly unique beads. She fancies each bead, each little painting as going out into the world on its own journey, telling its own little story.
